Strawberry season may technically be a few months away, but your grocery store doesn't know that and neither does your skin. Fresh strawberries are available right now, and with temperatures already feeling like a warm preview of what's coming, there's no reason to wait to start treating your skin like it's glow-up season. Because it is. We're calling it: March is glow-up season.
This DIY Strawberry Sugar Glow Scrub has become one of our absolute favorites. It takes about five minutes to make, uses simple ingredients you probably already have, smells absolutely incredible, and leaves your skin so soft you'll want to touch it all day. Let's make it.
Why Strawberries Are a Skincare Superstar
Before we get into the recipe, let's talk about why strawberries deserve a spot in your skincare routine, not just your fruit bowl.
✦ Vitamin C powerhouse: Strawberries are loaded with vitamin C, one of the most effective brightening antioxidants there is. It helps even out skin tone, fade dark spots, and boost collagen production over time.
✦ Natural AHAs: They contain alpha-hydroxy acids that gently exfoliate on a cellular level, enhancing the physical exfoliation from the sugar.
✦ Ellagic acid: This antioxidant compound helps protect the skin from environmental stressors and free radicals that contribute to premature aging.
✦ Anti-inflammatory: Strawberry's natural compounds help calm redness and irritation, making this scrub gentle enough even for more sensitive skin types.
When you combine fresh strawberries with sugar, nourishing oil, and honey, you've got a DIY treatment that rivals what you'd get at a spa for a fraction of the cost.
What You'll Need
Ingredients:
✦ 3–4 fresh, ripe strawberries
✦ 2 tablespoons white or brown sugar (brown sugar is slightly gentler)
✦ 1 tablespoon sweet almond oil (or olive oil, jojoba oil, or coconut oil)
✦ 1 teaspoon raw honey
✦ A small squeeze of fresh lemon juice (about ½ teaspoon)
Tools:
✦ A small bowl
✦ A fork for mashing
✦ A spoon for mixing
How to Make It
1. Hull and mash your strawberries. You want a chunky paste with some texture. A few pieces of strawberry in the mix are perfectly fine and actually great for exfoliation.
2. Add your sugar and stir to combine. The sugar will start to absorb some of the strawberry juice. That is exactly what you want.
3. Drizzle in your oil and honey and mix until everything is incorporated.
4. Add the squeeze of lemon juice and give it one final stir. Your scrub should be a thick, scoopable consistency. If it seems too runny, add a touch more sugar. Too thick? A few more drops of oil will do the trick.
5. Use immediately or refrigerate in a sealed container for up to 2 days.
How to Use It
This scrub is best used in the shower on damp skin — the water helps the scrub glide smoothly and prevents it from being too abrasive.
6. Step into the shower and let warm water dampen your skin for a minute or two.
7. Scoop a generous amount of scrub into your hands and apply to your skin in slow, circular motions. Focus on rough areas like your elbows, knees, and heels, but it's lovely all over.
8. Take your time. This is your moment! Let the scrub sit on your skin for 30–60 seconds if you like for extra brightening benefits.
9. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.
10. Pat your skin gently dry (don't rub!) and immediately follow with a body cream or body oil while your skin is still slightly warm and open.
For best results, use this scrub 2–3 times per week. After just a few sessions you'll notice your skin is noticeably smoother, brighter, and more even-toned. That's the strawberry magic at work!
Ingredient Substitutions
One of the best things about this recipe is how flexible it is. Here are some easy swaps depending on what you have on hand:
✦ Oil: Any skin-safe oil works beautifully here. Sweet almond and jojoba are lightweight and absorb quickly. Olive oil is richer. Coconut oil adds a lovely tropical scent.
✦ Sugar: White sugar has slightly larger granules for a more intense scrub. Brown sugar is finer and gentler which is great if your skin is on the more sensitive side.
✦ Honey: If you don't have honey, a few drops of vitamin E oil is a great substitute and adds extra antioxidant power.
✦ Lemon juice: Skip this if you have very sensitive skin or if you're planning to spend time in the sun right after as lemon can increase photosensitivity.
